Carrying out parliamentary elections in line with generally accepted democratic standards will broaden the possibility for the dialogue between Ukraine and the European Union.

Such thought was expressed by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, answering the journalists’ questions on Thursday.

“We should consistently solve problems. The key problem for Ukraine today, lies in carrying out elections in line with generally accepted standards. We should settle it, and the window of possibilities for the dialogue with the European Union will open wide,” said the Chairman of the Parliament.

Commenting on the relations between Ukraine and the European Union in connection with imprisonment of the former Prime Minister of Ukraine Yu.Tymoshenko, V.Lytvyn noted that “the situation has already gone so far that the problem with Tymoshenko is now both the problem of Ukraine and the European Union”. “We all perfectly well understand that it can be settled only within legal framework,” the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada said, adding that “the problem also lies in how we should do it”.
